LASIK

Young Man On BenchLASIK surgery is the most performed refractive surgery in the United States today. Are you tired of wearing glasses and dealing with contact lenses? LASIK may be right for you!

LASIK surgery is performed using a laser to reshape the cornea, which helps light to reflect correctly on the retina. This produces sharp vision at all distances for most patients, and can completely rid you of the need of glasses. To make the initial incision, traditionally a blade is used. But with today’s advanced technology, we are now able to offer all-laser LASIK, using a laser to make the incision as well.

During LASIK surgery, your doctor will create an incision using a femtosecond laser. This creates a thin “flap” over the cornea that can be moved back, exposing the inner layer of the cornea. Your doctor will then use an excimer laser to make the necessary adjustments to the cornea. When finished, your doctor will replace the flap, which needs no stitches and will heal on it’s own.

LASIK Procedure

The recovery process after LASIK is fairly easy, with some discomfort that goes away in the first few days or week. The biggest side effect associated with LASIK surgery is the feeling of extreme dry eye for the first day or so. Your doctor will give you medicated drops to help the healing process, as well as keep the eye lubricated and minimize discomfort.

It is important to remember that LASIK is not suitable for everyone. Some patients will not be candidates because of previous surgeries, previous injuries, or a thin and unstable cornea.

If you are considering LASIK surgery, as so many are, give us a call! We would be happy to examine your eyes to see if you are a candidate for LASIK, and if not, determine which LASIK alternative is right for you!
