Dry Eye Treatment

Dry eye syndrome is an extremely common condition, affecting millions of Americans. Dry eye syndrome is caused by a chronic lack of lubrication and moisture of the surface of the eye. This condition, if left unmanaged, can eventually lead to damage of the cornea. Ophthalmic Surgeons and Consultants of Ohio are a Dry Eye Center For Excellence and can help with the diagnosis and treatment of dry eye syndrome.

The symptoms of dry eye syndrome often include:

  • Dryness
  • Red eyes
  • Scratchiness
  • Burning sensation
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Watery eyes

Dry eye syndrome is either cause by lack of tears, or a poor quality of tears. Tears are made up of three components: the outer oily layer, the middle watery layer, and the inner mucin layer. All of these components come from a different gland, and if one is dysfunctional, this can cause dry eye.

Dry Eye Treatments

Fortunately, there are treatments available to manage the symptoms of dry eye. Your doctor will prescribe to you lubricating eye drops. Other treatments for dry eye syndrome include.

Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplements

Insufficient lipid (oil) production causes poor quality tears, which in turn causes dry eye syndrome. Taking omega-3 supplements will help your body create better quality tears over time.

Punctal Occlusion

The goal of this treatment method is to keep tears in the eye for a longer period of time. Your doctor uses a tiny “punctal plug” to block the tear duct, which the tears normal drain through. This keeps tears from draining too quickly, relieving some dry eye symptoms.

LipiFlow

LipiFlow LogoLipiFlow is an outer and inner eyelid thermal-pulsation treatment. It directly treats and unblocks glands to restore proper gland function. The treatment uses gentle heat and massage.

LipiView

The LipiView Ocular Surface Interferometer is a tool used to detect the level of a patient’s dry eyes. This tool gives doctors a better understanding of what is causing your dry eye symptoms, allowing them to determine the best method of treatment.
