Glaucoma

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a fairly common condition that causes permanent vision loss. It usually has no symptoms, so it is of utmost importance to attend regular eye exams. Most people don’t know they have glaucoma until their vision has been compromised. Glaucoma is caused by increased intra-ocular pressure inside of the eye. When the eye is not able to drain fluid properly, fluid becomes trapped and intra-ocular pressure rises. This pressure damages the optic nerve, which results in permanent vision loss and possibly blindness.

Glaucoma is a disease that often sneaks up on our patients, not realizing they have it until vision changes bring them into our office. Once vision is lost from glaucoma, we can do nothing to bring it back. However, we can stop the progression of glaucoma, and save remaining sight.

You are at increased risk for glaucoma if you:

  • Have a family history of glaucoma
  • Are over the age of 40 Are of African or Hispanic heritage
  • Have high eye pressure Have diabetes, migraines, high blood pressure, poor blood circulation
  • Have had an eye injury

Our doctors will discuss with you your medical and family background to determine whether or not you are at increased risk for glaucoma. If you are at high risk, you may be asked to come back for a yearly exam.
